Dessert Cravings

Sometimes we seek things at the wrong time of year … Am I right?

For example, right now when I’m dreaming about berry and watermelon desserts I’ve set my heart on pumpkin cheesecake bars. Obviously, I could go ahead and make them, but it just seems like making pumpkin is wrong anything until at least September.

However, I found a way to hobo to unspecified seasonal policies to some degree. Like serving hot things cold, if it’s most appropriate to do so.

Say hello Frozen Hot Chocolate… A normal hot drink recreated in a fixed state of being.

This summer time, you’ve probably had fresh fruit smoothies and milkshakes that you’re ready for a change of pace. Frozen Hot Chocolate is just the thing to dazzle the senses and chill you out on a smoky day!

How to Make Frozen Hot Chocolate

  1. Only melt the dark chocolate in a small pot with cocoa powder, sugar, milk, and a few instant coffee granules. Coffee beans are added to enhance the deep chocolate flavor, but do not overpower the flavor.
  2. Then pour the hot chocolate mixture in a blender and add more cold milk, vanilla extract, and ice. Puree until the mixture is thick and frozen.
  3. Pour the blended cocoa mixture into the glass and serve if available, or wrapped in whipped cream and all your favorite sweet garnish.

(Cold) Hot Chocolate Toppings and Variations

Kids love them with whipped cream and sprinkles. For an enticing visual effect, I would smear hot fudge sauce around the inside of the glass and let it drip to the side before adding the drink mixture.

This recipe can also be “Turtled” by adding chocolate sauce and caramel sauce inside the glass, then cover each glass with whipped cream and chopped pecans!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use Different Milk Options?

You can use other milk options for this recipe. Just be sure to stick to thicker milk alternatives if you want to keep an ultra-creamy drink. Cashew milk, oat milk, soy milk, and canned coconut milk (regular coconut milk is not as creamy as different types of canned).

Why Add Instant Coffee To The Recipe?

Instant coffee enhances the taste of chocolate. You can leave it out if you’re not a coffee fan or don’t like caffeine during the day.

Can I Make It Ahead and Stay in The Freezer?

I do not suggest doing this in advance. You can decorate your glass of chocolate, like I did before, but if you mix this drink too early and put it in the freezer, it will harden. So prepare and freeze the glasses in advance, then mix the drink when you’re ready to consume it!
