Classic Salty Dog Cocktail Recipe
I am a fan of a simple summer cocktail that is both refreshing and exciting… Drinks that aren’t too complicated to make, but still have seasonal ingredients and some unique nature.
We, on the other hand love the retro 1950s Salty Dog, which is a variation of the iconic Greyhound typically made with gin and grapefruit juice. This version replaces gin with vodka for a stronger and slightly less sweet taste.
Because it’s a classic Salty Dog cocktail recipe is made of vodka and served in glasses with a salted rim, it is similarly in a fun and delicious grapefruit margarita.

Ingredients You Need
We keep this Salty Dog drink real just by using it 5 ingredients.
All you need is:
- Ruby red orange juice – for a great tart and tangy flavor
- Vodka – use the highest quality shelves for the best taste
- Club soda – It makes a delightful bubbly cocktail
- Simple syrup – adds sweetness to balance grapefruit juice and vodka
- Kosher salt – for wiping glasses
more ice for serving drinks chilled with stones.

How to Make a Salty Dog
There’s just, like, 3 or 4 steps to make this classic easy cocktail recipe. Some “steps” are so simple I don’t think they count as steps!
Una, salt the lip of each glass: Set two small shallow plates. Put salt in one dish and a thin layer of simple syrup or agave syrup in another. Dip the edge of a highball glass in the syrup, then dip in the salt. Rotate a little as you dip to thoroughly bend the rim.
Next, fill the glass three-quarters full of ice.

Add grapefruit juice, vodka, club soda, and 1 teaspoon of simple syrup.
Stir the drink with a cocktail swizzle stick. Taste, and then add a little more simple syrup if desired.

Recipe Variations
There are many fun ways to jazz up this classic Salty Dog drink …
- Substitute kosher salt with flaken Fleur de Sel oa flavored salt you like.
- Add a pinch of cayenne pepper with salt before covering the edge of the glass. It gives the cocktail a kick of heat that is great with sweet, tangy and salty flavors!
- Use glowing water with orange flavor instead of simple club soda.
- Squeeze a bit of agave syrup on top of the drink before serving for more sweetness.
- Do as a non-alcoholic mocktail just by skipping the vodka and adding a little more grapefruit juice and an extra splash of sparkling water.
- As-this Salty Dog cocktail recipe is enough to prepare a drink. Of course you can make as many as you want for two or in the crowd! Pro Tip: add the amount of grapefruit juice and vodka needed to make however many drinks you want, and mix together in a cocktail shaker. Then add 6 ounces of the mixture to each glass, and top with a generous splash (1 ounce) of bubbly water.
- Make it blended! It becomes basically a grapefruit margarita recipe by dipping bubbly club soda with regular water or more grapefruit juice. Add all the ingredients to a blender and serve as a refreshing boozy slushy.
