The Classic Margarita

Let’s talk Margaritas with my hubby Lt. Dan

Friends of Hola! This is Lt Dan back to share random thoughts and stories.

I haven’t posted many of these these past few days because Mr. Spicy keeps me confined to a back room working on other aspects of A Spicy Perspective. But, since it was Cinco de Mayo, he freed me up enough to whip up some queso and guacamole and share my best margarita recipes to all of you.

Just kidding.

So where does your mind take you when you think of margaritas? Does it matter sun, sand, and crystal blue water? Maybe a pontoon boat on the lake with lots of friends? How about a backyard pool, background music, chips and salsa on the picnic table, and sounds of fun and laughter around?

Or possibly your favorite restaurant, surrounded by tacos and fajitas, glasses with salt, and jugs full of “concoction that will help me hang out…”

Wherever you take it, surely a fun place, usually full of sun, friends, food, and fun.

Margaritas aren’t usually a serious drink, one where you imagine the world in your big leather chair and smoking jacket.

It’s not a “sophisticated” adult drink like a Manhattan or Martinez.

Honestly, it depends on who you’re talking to, it’s its own thing, and not the same to anyone. Margaritas can be served spicy, frozen, top shelf, bottom shelf, with a beer in the middle, smoky, salted salt, not red with salt, with sugar, up, with ice, in a glass, in a pitcher (preferably), in a funnel (that’s fun), with a shot (yes please), in your hand (time to rest …)

You got the point.

It doesn’t matter how they are served, margaritas are generally loved by all.

Our Homemade Margarita Recipe

The ingredients are Really make a difference (in my opinion) to a margarita in Mexico is:

  • Good Tequila – the older tequila it is smoother, and somewhat less bitter
  • Triple Sec at La Belle (or Grand Marnier) – you like both for deep flavor
  • Homemade Simple Syrup – this is to balance the alcohol
  • Orange Juice – Just a little to add sweetness along with the brighter, citrus zest
  • Fresh Lime – citrus-y acid to offer a tropical note to the drink
  • Garnishes – coarse or flake sea salt and slices of oranges and limes for the edge of the glass

The other ingredients can be tweaked to your liking, but try to stick to fresh limes and good tequila.

The Best Margarita Recipe

“The Best Margarita Recipe” is the favorite in our house. It’s simple and packed with flavor.

It should be mentioned it can be called Knock You Naked Margaritas because they ay strong!

These babies are boozy and limey, but still balance with a bit of sweetness and salt. We usually are make them next to the pitcher (or two), even though this particular day we had homemade margaritas for two.

We often invite friends to share. (Or others serve us because we drank a pitcher before they arrived).

How to Make Homemade Margaritas

The great thing about The Best Margarita Recipe is that you can literally add all the ingredients at once, in a jug, and leave it until you’re ready to serve.

BUT just in case you need step by step Here it is:

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Make the Best Joint Margaritas?

We like our margaritas on the rocks, but this recipe also works well for creating fun and frozen mixed (frozen) margaritas.

In a blender, combine the margaritas ingredients with 2-3 cups of cubed ice. Pure to smooth.

How Do I Make A Single Serving The Best Margarita Recipe?

You don’t need a full pitcher? No problem! For single servings made in a shaker, combine 2 ounce Tequila, 2 ounces lime juice, 1 ounce La Belle, 3/4 ounce simple syrup, 1/3 ounce orange juice, 1/3 ounce Triple Sec.

Do I need to use both Triple Sec and Grand Marnier?

Surely you can use one or the other. Dan likes to add them both because they have a slightly different flavor. He said adding them both creates depth.

Can I buy a Simple Syrup instead of doing this?

Yes, there are many simple syrups you can buy for your margaritas. Some brands that Dan recommends are Barsmith (if you need to stay on the cheaper side), Yes Cocktail Company, Unusual Goods, and Proof Syrup.

How Do You Store Leftover Margaritas?

If you end up having leftovers (unlike me, haha) pour the leftovers into a freezable container and pop the ones in the freezer! Mason jars are great for this, especially if you want to freeze them in single-serving sizes which makes it easier to pull them out later and enjoy!
