This Easy Horchata Recipe is the the greatest for authentic Mexican -style beverages.

Using traditional time-saving ingredients and tricks, you can easily make a large batch of ice cold Horchata at home, from scratch, in just a few hours.

This is also good first and foremost the night before, and enjoy the next day at a potluck or poolside party!

My family loves this recipe, and it’s traditionally a great drink already for the kid. However, if you want to booze it, you can definitely add a shot of rum to each glass for a refreshing delicious adult beverage.

What Ingredients You Need

Here are all the ingredients in our authentic Mexico Horchata recipe:

  • Long-Grain Riceto create a thick and silky base
  • Almondsfor the perfect earthy, nutty flavor

  • Water
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk AND Missing Milk these two ingredients add sweetness and an evil creamy texture

Canned milk is a classic Mexican ingredient, which became popular without fresh milk. They give a unique flavor! However, you can substitute 3 cups of regular milk (or almond milk) + 1 cup of sugar if you prefer … Or if sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk are not available in your area.

How to Make Horchata

Making homemade Horchata from scratch is simple, even if it takes a few hours to cool before you can enjoy it. If love making a big batch the night before a festival, so it’s extremely cold and ready to go when guests arrive!

Here’s how to make the best homemade authentic Horchata:

1. First, bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a kettle or a large saucepan.

2. Then, in a large heat-safe bowl add the dried long-grail rice, sliced ​​or chopped almonds, whole cinnamon stick, and salt. Carefully pour boiling water over the rice mixture, and stir well. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or even overnight.

3. When cold, pour the rice mixture into a blender, along with the cinnamon stick. Puree until very smooth.

4. Next, set a fine-mesh strainer in a 10-cup or larger sized jug. Slowly pour the rice mixture into the colander. Allow the liquid to drain completely, removing any remaining debris.

5. Stir in the sweetened condensed milk, steamed milk, and vanilla extract. Canned milk (s) mixed with almond and cinnamon smells so tender the sweet!

6. Add more cold water, until you have 9-10 cups of Horchata total. I recommend 9 cups for super thick horchata; however, my kids like it pretty skinny and so I tend to do the full 10 cups.

Refrigerate the Horchata in the refrigerator until ready to enjoy. Give it a good stir before filing.

Serve over ice like, or with a shot of rum.

For extra flavor and flair, I also like to add a sprinkle of ground cinnamon on top of each glass.

How to Make Agua de Avena (Mexican Horchata with Oats)

Like this recipe, Mexico Horchata is usually made with rice. However, oats can substitute rice to make a popular (and healthy full of fiber) variety called Agua de Avena. Both are made in the same process, but you just swap the rice for the iron -cut oats.
