If you’ve never tried making biscuits and sauces before, you might not realize just how easy they are both to prepare.

In less than an hour, you can surprise your family with the massive, buttery, homemade biscuits, and the creamy sausage sauce you’ve never tasted!

Contrary to popular belief, sausage sauce is just about there sauce easier you will never do! It’s a rich topping, side dish, with protein all rolled into one.

However, you can also serve sausage sauce on toast, English muffins, fried steak chicken, or fried pork chops.

Gravy sausage with biscuits is a fabulous breakfast option (or brunch). I love you prepare my biscuits the night before and place in the refrigerator to keep the dough cool. Then in the morning, I pop the biscuits in the oven and start the sauce.

In about 30 minutes, I had a cool southern decadence meal the whole family was excited about!

Easy Sausage Recipe Ingredients

  • Ground pork sausage – Usually labeled “essential” or breakfast sausages.
  • All-purpose flour – This acts as thickening agent in the sauce.
  • All milk – You can use any type of milk (even black milk) but whole milk is preferable for taste and texture.
  • Tim – This favorite spice rack adds that a little extra rounded the flavor. You can use dried or fresh thyme leaves.
  • Garlic powder – The second add-on improves the overall taste of the sauce. A little goes a long way.
  • Salt and pepper – No finishing sauce without a generous sprinkling of ground pepper!

How To Make Sausage Gravy

  1. The Brown Sausage. Place a large sauté pan over medium heat, and brown the sausage, stirring and breaking it into smaller pieces. The sausage should be fully cooked before moving on.
  2. Add the flour. Add the flour and condiments. Stir well to coat the sausage in flour. Move the sausage around the pan so the dough has time to cook.
  3. Add Milk and simmer. Pour in the milk. Stir and simmer the sauce until it is thick and smooth. If the sauce gets too thick, add another splash of thin milk to it out.
  4. Serve on homemade hot biscuits, English muffins, or toast.

You can serve this easy Sausage Recipe Gravy on any type of biscuit, even canned biscuits. However, we like it best on our favorite Southern CatHead biscuits.

Yes! You can make and refrigerate sausage sauce up to 4 days in advance. Heat it on the stovetop and add in an extra splash of milk to thin it out.

For the biscuits, I would personally pa cook them ahead of time. Biscuits are always better fresh! However, you can make the dough and cut the biscuits out a day before baking. Then refrigerate them overnight, so they are ready to cook in the morning.

Can I Freeze Sausage Gravy?

Well … You can technically freeze anything. But I wouldn’t freeze sauce. It’s best to do it and use it up in a few days.

Can I Make Gluten-Free Biscuits with Gravy?

Yes. Make sure the sausage you buy does not contain gluten. Then replace gluten-free 1-to-1 baking mixture for the all-purpose dough. For the biscuits, we love this gluten-free biscuit recipe.

Can I Make Gravy Sausage Without Pork?

Yes. Look for ground turkey sausage used in place of pork sausage.

How To Make Gravy Sausage for Biscuits and Gravy! This simple sauce recipe is fast and so delicious, it will become a staple of the weekend.

  • Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sausage and break it into small pieces with a wooden spoon. Brown the sausage, stirring and breaking it into smaller pieces.

  • Once the sausage is cooked through, add the flour, thyme, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Stir well to coat the sausage in flour, letting it absorb the fat. Stir and cook another 2 minutes.

  • Pour in 3 cups milk. Stir and simmer to thicken the sauce. Once it is very thick and smooth, turn off the heat. If the sauce gets too thick, add another ½ cup of milk.

  • Serve over homemade hot biscuits, English muffins, or toast.
